Objectives
  • Improvement of ‘performing arts’ in Bangladesh and take steps to arrange exchange of views and practical training at national and international arena.
  • Identification, preservation, documentation and initiation of research programs on the traditional cultural elements, cultural heritage and history of Bangladesh.
  • Search for traditional and customary practice of arts and taking effective steps for their complete revival.
  • Undertake projects to create awareness on cultural heritage, values and history and also related to human rights and poverty alleviation for the overall socio-economic development of under privileged population.
  • Take initiative to establish a channel of communication between the cultural heritage of Bangladesh and that of other nations in the world.
Introduction

Bangladesh Institute of Theatre Arts (BITA), a non-government organization, has been administering development initiatives focusing human rights, cultural upliftment and poverty alleviation. The then a group of intellectuals, grass root artists and development activists have founded BITA in 1994 with a firm belief in culture as an effective tool for facilitating social changes in a sustainable manner. Since inception BITA works with the Rights Based Approach to development, uses cultural approach in all development activities and considers culture itself as an object for further development.

BITA has introduced diverse alternative and innovative initiatives aiming to make desired changes fostering the rights and entitlements of the people living in poverty, injustice & exclusion adopting newer concepts, approaches & techniques. Ongoing programs of BITA emphasize the issues of cultural heritage and diversity, education, rights of children & women including adolescents, youth empowerment, local government, social accountability, employment-based skill building, countering violent extremism, social justice, ageing, disaster risk reduction, countering-trafficking and safe migration.

The organization is registered under the Department of Social Welfare, the NGO Affairs Bureau and the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms in Bangladesh.

Mission

BITA’s mission is to be a partner of the poor and disadvantaged people in their culture-based approach of demanding their rights particularly human rights for poverty alleviation.

Major Activities

Organizational development initiatives are classified into four core programs: Cultural Promotion, Information & Knowledge Management, Rights & Governance, Collaboration

Major activities under Cultural Promotion:

  • Development theatre – Utilizing theatre for community communication on rights, entitlements and responsibilities among disadvantaged people with active participants from grassroots artists, theatre activists.
  • Cultural Campaign – Issue-based campaign to sensitize people and influence institutions
  • Theatre-In-Education (TIE)- Dissemination on educational topics to young learners in entertaining mode.
  • Traditional Puppet Presentation : Utilizing local traditional cultural elements to disseminate messages on contemporary issues and create engagement of children & youth in social action
  • TfD Resource Centre – Collection, classified preservation and display of training and educational materials on cultural heritage and theatre practices and evidences.
  • Regional Cultural Exchange – Arrange cultural exposure and joint production on culture and development.

Major activities under Information & Knowledge Management:

  • Design and provide capacity building training ( Human Rights, Theatre Practice and Presentation, Easy Theatre Making Process, TIE, Facilitation and Communication, Life Skills, Disaster Risk Reduction, Participatory Planning, Local Government, etc)
  • Employment-based and vocational skill development and education
  • Research on Cultural Heritage and applications of cultural communication
  • Training module and materials development
  • Participatory Video Documentation (PVD)
  • IEC Materials Development

Major activities under Rights & Governance:

  • Education – Provide education to disadvantaged children on primary level formal schooling and preparedness for school-going children
  • Children Space – Innovative initiatives to facilitate creative and mental development of deprived children. And also create space for children in freedom of expression and protection.
  • Women Circle – Learning and working space of women on rights, entitlements, livelihood, mobility, participation and creative exploration.
  • Community level awareness raising courtyard meeting/session on diversified issues (Like child rights, women rights, human trafficking, safe migration, etc.)
  • Building community-based organization to work on cultural initiatives, youth engagement, disaster risk reduction, etc.
  • Conduct Social Accountability Initiatives with local government Institutions and Nation Building Departments
  • Issue-based day observance in association with government and NGOs
  • Promote rights and culture of indigenous communities
  • Carry out local level campaign and advocacy

Major activities under Collaboration

  • BCCT (BITA Culture and Communication Trust): An alternative learning space for different stakeholders in an eco-friendly environment.
  • Carry out Joint Cultural Action on Human Rights, Human Trafficking Prevention, Climate Change & Environment
  • Rights and Development based Training on Theatre Arts, Human Rights, Culture and Development, Child Rights, Theatre Practice
  • Museum of Traditional Musical Instruments: Education spot with display of diverse and rare traditional musical instruments from hilly and plain lands manufactured by traditional artisans.
