Introduction

Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company

Formerly the Leyte Filipiniana Dance Troupe, founded in 1960 by Teresita Veloso-Pil, its choreographer and artistic director. The group started at the Holy Infant Academy in Tacloban City, drawing members from the students and the faculty, and with the support of Sr. Mary Canisius, director of the academy.

The Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company (LKCD) made its professional debut on 21 Sep 1961, which led to numerous invitations all over the country. From 1961 to 1964, the company toured major cities in the Philippines. In 1965, the troupe was designated as Cultural Ambassadors by President Diosdado Macapagal and embarked on a ten-month tour of the USA. The company made an appearance in the famed Ed Sullivan show watched by millions of Americans.

Since then, the troupe has gone on 25 international tours, performing to capacity crowds at Expo ’70 in Osaka, opening the UNESCO cultural season in Paris, dancing to standing-room audiences in Saudi Arabia, receiving standing ovations from over 7,000 spectators at the World’s Fair ‘82 in Tennessee, participating as one of the “18 World’s Best Dance Troupes” at the opening rites of the Epcot Center in Disneyworld in Florida, and joining international festivals in Israel, Rome, France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Portugal, England, Slovenia, Greece, Kuwait, Bahrain, Mexico, and Malaysia. In 1980, the LKDC received the silver medal at the Dijon International Folklore Festival, held in Dijon, France, a dance competition participated in by over 32 folk dance groups from all over the world.

In 2014, the company was able to honor prior engagements despite suffering from the ravages of super-typhoon Yolanda, performing at the International Cultural Festival in Thailand from 17 to 22 Aug, and at the closing ceremony of the China-ASEAN Cultural Exchange Year from 12 to 17 Dec at Myanmar. • In 2016 The dance troupe was recognized one of the best dance companies in the world (www.danceanddance.com)

With the support of the Leyte Filipiniana – Kalipayan Alumni Association, the governments of the Province of Leyte and the City of Tacloban, The Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the National Commission for Culture and Arts, as well as its alumni, many now living in the United States and other parts of the world, The Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company continues to educate and entertain audiences locally and internationally on the splendor of Philippine dance and music.
