Objectives

The main objective of Laksala is to be a commercially viable, socially responsible marketing organization which creates opportunities for rural products to enter mega – markets, thereby enhancing the growth potential of the gift and souvenir category and adding value to the tourism sector.

Laksala is actively engage in the preservation of handicrafts with a traditional and cultural value such as;

  • Sponsoring of technical skills and knowledge of handicraftsmen.
  • Introducing and improve new design concepts steering the existing market trends in the local and export market.
  • Providing advanced skills development, technical and design development training to uplift the handicraft sector by enhancing the income.
  • Providing information and assistance to carry out market promotions to craftsmen, traders and others in the field of handicraft sector.
  • Providing enhancement for the skilled craftsmen by competitions and award ceremonies.

Introduction

Sri Lanka Handicrafts Board (Laksala) was established under the National Crafts Council and Allied Institutions Act, No.35 of 1982.Laksala is the only State owned Gift and Souvenir Boutique. This institution has perceived various changes with an eternally growing list of products on sale. Through branches located island wide, Laksala offers the extensive variety of all Sri Lankan products at a reasonable price. This organization enables numerous industries which supply goods for it to stay profitable in business. An eclectic blend of items ranging from tea and spices to, colorful batik ware to, an elaborate collection of art and craft as well as traditional Sri Lankan Gems and Jewellery are in Laksala Stores.
