The objective of the State Institute of Art and Culture of Uzbekistan is the training of highly qualified personnel in the fields of culture and art. In particular, this includes the areas of radio, television, and cinema; theater art; folk art; management of cultural and art institutions; social work; and socio-cultural activities.

Introduction

The institute was established in 2012 on the basis of the two existing higher educational institutions: the State Institute of Arts and the Tashkent State Institute of Culture. The history of the State Institute of Arts originates from 1936, when it was organized as the Tashkent Theater and Art Institute. The Tashkent State Institute of Culture was established in 1974 on the basis of the Library Department of the Nizami Pedagogical Institute, the Faculty of Cultural and Educational Work of the Tashkent State Conservatory, and the Faculty of Directors of the amateur theater of the Tashkent Theater and Art Institute.

Major Activities

Today, the State Institute of Art and Culture of Uzbekistan is the only higher educational institution for the training of specialists in the field of amateur artwork, library, professional cinema,, and theatrical art, radio, and television. It also prepares personnel for social and cultural activities, social work, and management of cultural and art institutions.

The institute has two branches―the Nukus branch (in the Republic of Karakalpakstan) and the Kokand branch (in the Fergana region). Currently, over 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students are studying at the institute. Graduates of the Department of Folk Art (more than 400 students study at the department) are sent mainly to centers of culture and recreation whose activities are directly related to intangible cultural heritage.
