The first and main objective of our organization is to preserve and safeguard cultural and natural, movable and immovable, tangible and intangible heritage on the territory of Ulytau in its natural environment – preserve a cultural landscape of Ulytau and all its components (monuments of architecture and archaeology, living intangible cultural heritage, natural landscape, unique natural objects, local flora and fauna).
The second objective is a thoughtful use of this heritage for education, without harming it.
The third objective is the identification, identification, documentation, study of the cultural and natural heritage in its territory, with the involvement of relevant scientific organizations and specialists.
The fourth objective is to popularize and promote the cultural and natural heritage among the general public.
The “Ulytau” National Historic, Cultural and Natural Reserve-Museum was established by the Kazakh SSR Government Decree in 1990, on the territory of the historic Ulytau region. The Reserve includes 25 natural, archaeological, architectural and archaeological complexes in general, with a total 147,246 thousand hectares of protected territory. The archaeological and architectural heritage is represented by 337 monuments of broad chronological range from the Stone Age to the new time.
The ICH of Ulytau includes preserved ancient traditions of steppe herd horse breeding and related customs, calendar holidays and ceremonies, traditional horse games and competitions, knowledge of nature, folk veterinary medicine, as well as the tradition of worshiping holy places, local folk crafts and trade, traditional domestic crafts, national cuisine, traditional household rituals and folklore.
The natural heritage of Ulytau is represented by well-preserved lowland, steppe, river and lake landscapes with a wide variety of flora and fauna, with nesting places for migratory birds, with rare and valuable plant species. In 1998, the cultural landscape of Ulytau entered the Preliminary List of Kazakhstan as a candidate for possible future inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The activities of Ulytau reserve-museum conform its goals. It includes regular inspection of cultural and natural heritage sites in the territory by educated staff, periodical inspection and assessment of their condition by the technical specialists, monitoring of architectural and archaeological monuments and places of worship, and, if necessary, conservation and restoration with the participation of invited restorers, and other measures to ascertain the preservation of heritage sites and to maintain them in good condition.
An important part of our activities is to collect, store, and display the Museum collection. A substantial part of it presented for visitors’ view in the two exhibition halls of the office building, the rest of the exhibits kept in the storage for conducting their constant research and scientific processing.
Our Reserve-museum is active in popularizing and promoting the cultural and natural heritage through publications and mass media, organizing exhibitions, guided tours, seminars, conferences, round tables, lectures, themed evenings, corporate meetings, workshops, contests, festivals. We prepare catalogs and guidebooks, photo albums, methodical posters, stands, banners, and other printed materials, including advertising for publishing, also distribute educational-methodical literature and manuals, souvenirs and printing products.
