From time immemorial, population of Sri Lanka is represented by various ethnic groups such as Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, indigenous people, Ceylon kaffirs, Burgers and Malays. All these races have their own customs and cultural values. However, the rural based Sinhalese Buddhist is rich in cultural values and features. It is of paramount importance to explore and preserve the cultural aspects which are unique to each of these ethnic groups. The Ministry of Culture and Arts has taken steps to establish a Folk music Conservation Centre on 23rd September, 2010,with the assistance of the Royal Norwegian Government.
