Knowledge and Practices Concerning Nature and the Universe
The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute is a premier Institute in India, and known for its unequivocal contribution to the field of Indological research. From 1918 to 1966 the Institute successfully completed the ambitious project of preparation of the Critical Edition of the Mahabharata.
It has also published valuable research works based on the same. Among other prestigious publications stand the History of Dharmashastra written by Mahamahopadhyaya Bharataratna Pandurang Vaman Kane, the Vedic Bibliography by R. N. Dandekar and 93 Volumes of our research journal Annals of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.
Since 1987, the Institute has undertaken a gigantic project of Prakrit English Dictionary on Historical Principles and have published six volumes. The Institute has been making steady progress in the field of research and has undertaken a number of research and other activities. The Institute has celebrated its centenary on the 6th of July, 2017.
The Institute holds 15 lecture series every year and conducts workshops on specialized subjects.
Besides the research activities, we have undertaken multidimensional infrastructural development of our campus. We are also modernizing and digitizing our Libraries which contains over 1,35,000 books on various subjects of Orientology and 28,000 rare and ancient manuscripts and trying to serve the people at large by making the material available online.
