Introduction

Museum Danar Hadi Batik is a private museum owned by H. Santosa Doellah, who is also the founder and until recently was the President Director of PT. Batik Danar Hadi, a famous batik organization in Indonesia.

The museum is in nDalem Wuryaningratan in the former residence of K.P.H. Wuryaningrat, a prominent Indonesian independence movement and Pakubowono to X, one of the kings of Surakarta.

nDalem Wuryaningratan was designated as a cultural heritage in the city of Surakarta on June 3, 2013, by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Hall and Central Java province.

Inside the museum are stored more than 1,078 pieces of old batik cloth, which come mostly from a collection of H. Santosa Doellah that totals approximately 10,000 pieces. They are arranged under the theme “Batik Effect of Age and Environment,” which tells the history of batik and its development in Indonesia through a tangle of colors and motifs.

Each patterns and the softness of the material will amaze visitors. The collection includes motifs created and developed in the Dutch colonial period, taken from European stories, such as Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, and Little Red Riding Hood; batik Kraton, which features motifs with philosophical meanings; batik with Chinese influences, which reveal an incredible mix of cultures; batik motifs with an Indian influence that mimic batik motifs woven Patola of Gujarat; and Chintz motif from Coromandel; as well as other traditional batiks.

Just behind the museum visitors can see the process of making batik in the traditional way (mini-workshop), and of making batik painting and printing by using a cap.

Trip Advisor awarded the Museum Batik Danar Hadi the “Excellent Award” three times (in 2013, 2014, and 2015) based on visitor reviews, and mentions on its website that the museum is a number one “Travellers Choice” in Surakarta.

The Wuryaningratan nDalem complex also includes a showroom that sells a variety of products from PT. Batik Danar Hadi and a restaurant named Soga Resto and Lounge.

The complex is thus a tourist destination with the concept of one-stop shopping and one-stop batik adventure, so travelers can save time.
