Education and Training
To build a peaceful, discrimination and exploitation – free sustainable society where there is a sense of respect, dignity, quality, self esteem, service. It would also have participation of women, youth & children, artisans & weavers.
HWA also aims to build a society where there is equal opportunity and provision of social, political, economic and cultural rights with eco-friendly and dignified living.
Protection and promotion of traditional handicrafts and handloom products along with safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage is major objective of the organisation having women empowerment and sustainable livelihood and youth skill up-gradation in art, craft, cultural & traditional sectors. HWA aims to organise and empower the most disadvantaged sections of society for sustainable and comprehensive development leading to improved quality of living and promoting their traditional culture.
Human Welfare Association (HWA), registered in 1991, aimed to address the need of the vulnerable, dalits, OBC and minority communities in Varanasi with special focus on women, children & youth including artisans and weavers. The initiative was taken by Dr. Rajani Kant, Ph.D. in Soil & Agriculture Chemistry from Banaras Hindu University. He was also a Research Associate for 5 years in Ganga Action Plan. HWA is registered under society’s registration act 1860, FCRA, Govt. of India, Section 80G and 12A under Income Tax Department.
HWA has facilitated for IPR status through GI registration for 9 products like – Banaras Brocades and Sarees, Handmade Carpet of Bhadohi, Champa Silk Sarees and Fabric, Mirzapur Handmade Dari, Banaras Gulabi Meenakari, Varanasi Wooden Lacquerware & Toys, Nizamabad Black Pottery, Varanasi Metal Repousee craft and more than 130 GI-AU registration, all has granted GI. 3 handicraft products are under process of GI registration i.e. Varanasi Stone undercut work, Chunar Sand Stone, jute wall hanging of Ghazipur.
Organization is also working for promotion of India Handloom Brand, Handloom mark, gender issues, communal harmony, is involved in the advocacy of child rights, handloom and handicrafts, weavers, artisans, marginalized farmers, women literacy initiative and future energy issues, facilitating Going Green project at Varanasi for handloom sector with 5000 weavers and artisans. HWA has also conducted various GI awareness and post – GI workshops in Varanasi and in other part of Uttar Pradesh. The organization has also participated in World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Conference at Geneva, Switzerland from October 5 – Oct 11, 2015.
Human Welfare Association has set an example by protecting and promoting 11 handicraft and handloom products through Geographical Indication Registration under Intellectual Property Right and protected the legal identity of 1.5 million artisans, weavers and related stakeholders for their dignity and sustainable livelihood opportunity.
HWA has been involved in the implementation of various activities through community participation and implemented various projects like Facilitated for IPR – GI registration for world famous Banaras Brocades and Sarees, Wooden Lacquerware & Toys, Gulabi Meenakari, Metal Repousee craft, Nizamabad Black Pottery, Mirzapur Handmade Dari, Handmade Carpet of Bhadohi, Varanasi Glass Beads all has granted, 3 major handicraft products are in the final stage of IPR status and 6 handicrafts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh has proposed for GI registration.
The organization also focuses on Handloom Mark, India Handloom, gender issues, communal harmony, and works on advocacy of child rights. It also works with handloom, handicrafts, weavers, artisans, marginalized farmers, Women literacy initiative and Future Energy issues is also the focus of organization.
HWA facilitates Going Green project in Varanasi for handloom sector with 5000 weavers and artisans and is involved in launching event of USTTAD, Ministry of Minority Affairs, GoI and facilitated product development through NID & NIFT in Varanasi with the artisans under USTTAD scheme and on the issue of Child Rights, Girl child education, basic education, school sanitation, hygiene education, Health & Family Welfare, diarrhoea management, Basic Education To Sustainability, Child Labor & Child Trafficking issues, vocational training initiatives with girls. Women Economic Empowerment was also important project work with the support of various international and national agencies including Government.

Clinton Foundation, CARE India, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation – New Delhi; Sir Dorab Ji Tata Trust – Mumbai; EU & TraidCraft through AIACA, New Delhi, The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge- USA with Tata Trust & Prajanopaya Foundation, ; Vodafone Foundation, VSO India, D.S. Group and Govt. of India –Ministry of HRD, Ministry of Textile Ministry of Commerce Ministry of Labour(NCLP); NABARD; Union Bank of India, Taj Group of Hotels.
HWA has organised several workshops, seminars, meetings at national, state and regional level and participated in various international events.
HWA was awarded at 9th National Intellectual Property Awards held on April27, 2017 by Hon’ble Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.
