Facilitationg Colaboration and Exchange of Information between paguyuban associations of kris enthusiasts
To facilitate and promote collaboration and exchange of information between paguyuban associations of kris enthusiasts. To carry out action plans proposed by kris community members and associations, for safeguarding, education, and development of kris cultural heritage. To represent the kris community in interaction with central and local governments. To organize exhibitions, seminars, and workshops related to kris culture. To promote research and documentation of kris culture. As a UNESCO accredited NGO, to participate in activities and meetings related to the UNESCO 2003 Convention.
Indonesian National Kris Secretariat (SNKI) was established upon the proposal of kris culture communities as expressed in the nomination file of the Indonesian Kris as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2004 (proclaimed in 2005). Indonesian kris was later inscribed on the Representative List in 2008, and SNKI was accredited by UNESCO under the 2003 Convention in 2012.
The objective of SNKI is to promote and facilitate collaboration and exchange of information between paguyuban associations of kris enthusiasts, and to carry out action plans for the safeguarding, education, and development of kris culture. SNKI was joined by fifteen paguyuban associations, also with educational institutions and museums in 2006. At its first Congress in 2011, SNKI comprised some sixty associations, educational institutions, and museums. By its second conference in 2016, SNKI had grown to include some 125 associations, educational institutions, and museums.
The General Chairman of SNKI is elected for a five-year term at the Congress, also held every five years. The first general chairman was Wiwoho Basuki Tjokornegoro. The second general chairman was Dr. Erman Suparno, and the most recently elected general chairman is Dr. Fadli Zon. The organization has chairpersons responsible for various fields, and regional coordinators.
