Introduction

Our regional museum of local history is one of the oldest museums in Kazakhstan. It was founded on September 11th in 1883 by the political exile E. Michaelis. N. Konshin, N. Dolgopolov, P. Lobanovsky, Abai Kunanbayev, as well as local historians took an active part in the activities of the museum. The museum building is known in the city as the home of the governor. This is the monument of a provincial architecture of the middle of the 19th century. During the revolution, the house was called  “The House of Freedom”, later it was renamed to the “House of Political Education”, and in 1978 it housed the local history museum. For a long time, the Museum functioned only as an exhibition hall. Only in 1983, to its 100th anniversary, the Museum reopened its doors to visitors. The Museum has 7 rooms.

Opening hall – it contains the layout map of the East Kazakhstan region, a brief description of the region.

The first hall is the local geology presented by a geological map of, 4 dioramas, and a paleontological collection.

The second hall is the animal and plant world of the region.

Major Activities

Our Museum holds exhibitions, lectures on various topics, designed to contribute to the preservation and promotion of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. So, for example, in 2015, a thematic lecture “Abai, Shukkarim, Mukhtar – Ultymzydyk Uly Tulgalary” was organized about the work and life of three giants of Kazakh literature. In the same year an ethnographic lecture “Khalmyzdyn ulttyk nakyshtary” was held. Preparatory work for the event included studying a literature that tells about the types of national ornaments, their content, and meaning. Realising the importance and role of research in preserving the national cultural heritage, our organization works closely with universities. In 2015 from June 28 to July 3 a historical-ethnographic expedition was conducted with the participation of the Department of History of the Shakarim University, the Regional Museum of local history of Semey city and a support of the television company LLP “Bayuakov TVK-6”, in celebration of the 550th anniversary of the Kazakh Khanate and Abay’s 170th birthday. A famous expedition of Scherbyna on the territory of Eastern and Northern Kazakhstan was conducted more than 100 years ago by the tsarist government decree.

During 1909-10, a part of the Expedition worked under the leadership of a future leader of the Alash movement – Alikhan Bokeikhanov. Our expedition initialized a task to itself – follow the rout of Alikhan in the territory of the Shaganskaya and Buglinskaya volosts, nowadays rural districts territory of Sarzhal, Tokhtamys, Medeu. The mission of the expedition was to familiarize with the historical and cultural monuments, identify the ethnographic heritage that has survived up to this day. Famous archeologists, historians, ethnographers, local historians and specialists of the Semey regional history Museum participated in the expedition. Every year the Museum participates in the ritual of “Kymyzmuryndyk” – the national holiday of the first kumys. Work on the popularization of folk arts and crafts is carried out both in the museum and in the branches of the Museum. Such events include an exhibition of applied art called “Atadan balaga miras” organized in the Ayagoz branch of the Museum, as well as an exhibition of products by masters of applied art from the city of Semey, which was held by the staff of the regional Museum of local history. Along with that, a mobile ethnographic exhibition “Nauryz nakyshtary” holds annually. The song festival in honor of a famous and talented singer Amire Kashaubaev organized at the beginning of 2018. Also, an exhibition “Dombyra Dastan” organized dedicated to the National Day of Dombra. The Museum conducts workshops of local masters of applied art with the participation of pupils and students.
