Objectives

Pally Baul Samaj Unnayan Sangstha aims to preserve and revive the cultural traditions at one hand and develop the socio-economic status of the community.

The main objectives of the organization are:

  • to popularize and develop audience base for the rich Folk Cultural heritage of Bangladesh to the world,
  • to establish the value of the Bauls living in the rural areas by organizing training for them
  • to showcase the folk culture to the urban community through cultural programmmes
  • to link the Folk artists/Bauls in different social and economic activities e.g. awareness programmes highlighting the development issues: rehabilitation of disabled children, environmental pollution, gender discrimination, family planning, social exploitation, personal hygiene, sanitation, child-rights, etc.
  • to promote coexistence among people irrespective of their religious beliefs.
Introduction

Pally Baul Samaj Unnayan Sangstha (PBSUS) set up in 1998 is a nonprofit cultural organization that works to preserve the cultural heritage of Bangladesh.

Pally Baul Samaj Unnayan Sangstha is engaged in collection, preservation and promotion of Baul Songs of Haor region (Sylhet), which is known for its rich folk songs heritage. The organization has been working for development of lives of Folk and Baul artists as well by upholding their identity, uniqueness and rights.

Major Activities

The major activities of the organization: under the project ‘Preservation of Music and Cultural Traditions’ in 2004 -2005 with The Embassy of The United States of America in Bangladesh, the organization has covered 60 schools all over Bangladesh with their school awareness programmes on the country’s rich musical heritage.

In their recent project,  ‘Preservation & Awareness Raising on Folklore Tradition’ with The Embassy of The Federal Republic of Germany, Dhaka, Bangladesh we have all ready been able to find out ‘Top Ten Baul Artists and Top Six Musicians’ (Under-30) of Bangladesh. PBSUS handed over documentation CD of Baul songs featuring 50 mystical songs in MP3 format to each all the rural schools, with the aim to preserve the Baul tradition.

Under the project ‘Preservation of Music and Cultural Traditions’ in 2004 -2005 with The Embassy of The United States of America, Dhaka, Bangladesh the organization has covered 60 schools all over Bangladesh with their school awareness programmes on the country’s rich musical heritage.

The organisation researched and identified ‘Top Ten Baul Artists and Top Six Musicians’ (Under-30) of Bangladesh under ‘Preservation & Awareness Raising on Folklore Tradition’ with The Embassy of The Federal Republic of Germany, Dhaka. PBSUS also provided financial support to Bauls for sustenance, during medical needs and children’s education.

The organization has done video documentation of the works of top twenty Baul Artists of Bangladesh. PBSUS has also collected 3000 Baul songs around the country and published it as a book.

Apart from the above mentioned the organization also works to promote the Baul Community and link them to various Social Campaigns: Sensitize the Inhabitants of Dhaka on Manmade Environmental hazards through Baul Song. The issues focused upon are: Sound Pollution, Need to Save River, environment.

They have also worked in Schools on to generate awareness about Environmental issues, Environment Pollution, Rights of Garments Workers, Daily Labourers and also educated the community on Industrial hazards Management.
