Introduction

Public Association “Kuhhoi Pomir” is a voluntary, non-profit association of citizens, created as a result of the free will of citizens for an unlimited period of activity.

The association operates in the Mountainous Badakhshan Autonomous Region of the Republic of Tajikistan. The association was created on the basis of the NGO “Pamir” Public Foundation, which was established on December 9, 2007. On April 21, 2014, the organization was re-registered under the name of the Public Association “Kuhhoi Pomir”. The founders and members of the NGO “Kuhhoi Pomir” are mainly scholars, researchers, poets, writers and journalists.

The organization promotes development of ecological and cultural tourism in the Mountainous Badakhshan region. It is a member of the Pamir Environmental Cultural Tourism Association (PECTA). Taking into account the effective activities of the organization for the preservation of bio-culture, the NGO “Kuhhoi Pomir” in 2015 was admitted as the UNESCO club in Tajikistan.
At the Seventh Session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was held from 4 to 6 June 2018 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, NGO “Kuhhoi Pomir” was accredited by the UNESCO General Assembly.

Major Activities

The main activity of the organization is collecting and disseminating folk knowledge and good traditions of the Pamir Tajiks on natural flora and fauna resources. Often, expeditions go to the most remote regions to collect, qualify, document and archive the traditional knowledge of the people.

The organization has created four public clubs of culture and nature lovers, in pilot educational institutions of secondary schools. Clubs were specially created at schools in order to draw more attention of the younger generation to the problems of protecting local biodiversity and bio-culture. Clubs participate in the collection of national traditional knowledge of intangible cultural heritage, contribute to the creation of a social network to protect bio-culture and biodiversity in the living environment of the indigenous peoples of the Pamirs, warning about the most important threats to the livelihood of wild fauna and disturbances of the local terrain, enhancing human interaction with nature, overcoming cultural erosion in relation to wild fauna as natural wealth.

The organization holds seminars and training sessions on the study of multimedia storytelling, collecting data on the state of culture and nature on a smartphone via the Survey123 mobile app.
Specialists of the organization often publish materials on the general theme “Man. Culture Nature” in print and electronic media, on social networks.

The organization has created three television films on the theme “Man, Culture, Nature”, with coverage of local ancestral traditions. Each year, the association holds in the summer, environmental and cultural events called “Festival of Wildlife”. The program of each festival includes: performances of cultural practitioners, sacred people, exhibitions of local dishes, handicrafts, drawings and essays of schoolchildren about nature, revitalization of folk songs and dances, folk games, various sports and gambling competitions, thematic shows in defense of local nature, performances, performance of poets and scholars, presentations, quizzes.
